Day 4 - Goodness of God

I love You, Lord Oh Your mercy never fails me

All my days, I've been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up

Until I lay my head Oh,

I will sing of the goodness of God

Cause all my life You have been faithful

And all my life You have been so, so good

With every breath that I am able

Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love Your voice You have led me through the fire

And in darkest night You are close like no other

I've known You as a Father I've known You as a Friend

And I have lived in the goodness of God,

This song always moves me when I reflect back on my life and see God. Often in the moment of our troubles it can be hard to see what God is doing but hindsight is a wonderful thing. With hindsight we can see more clearly. When we reflect back we can process our past, but it is important to process our past in the context of God and build a new narrative for us to step into our future. We may not feel that God is close to us in our darkest night at the time but I can look back and see God was there through others or key points etc. The Bible especially in the Old Testament highlights the importance of reflecting and remembering our past and highlighting the key milestones. We should remind ourselves of who God is and who he has been in our life as he never changes. Joshua encourages the Israelites to continue to possess and take the promise land by reminding them of what God has done before.

Joshua 23: 9-11

“For the LORD has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you. Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the LORD your God fights for you, just as he has promised. So be very careful to love the LORD your God.

Looking back at God’s faithfulness can make us full of faith for the future, to step into all God has for us and to overcome the challenges we face. If God has done it before he can do it again and reignite our love for Him. It’s like looking back at old photo albums to recapture your love for family and friends and can bring you closes to them as you recount stories and retell of crazy times but with a smile on your face. I pray that we will look back at 2020 and recount stories of God’s faithfulness and goodness to us with a smile despite the challenges at the time that maybe did not feel so funny. When we look back we can see God’s goodness and faithfulness to us even if it didn’t go according to our plans and wasn’t a good time. We know God’s goodness is running after me and you. Knowing this allows us to surrender to God’s plans as we know he has good plans for us even if it feels scary. Declaring his goodness in the face of our current circumstances can change us and our circumstances.

Think about / Meditate on:

  • Recount times in your life you have known God’s goodness and faithfulness. If you don’t record these maybe journal these milestones to remember again when we face our future.

  • Spend time declaring the goodness of God in your life now as you sing this song.
